Baby, It’s Cold Outside

It is so cold today! I don’t hate many things, but I hate being cold. I have been drinking lots of coffee and tea today and had turkey chili for lunch. Anything warm sounds so good to me. I dread walking even ten steps outside, much less across campus to my next class. This is not good because I am completely unmotivated to make the trek to the gym (running outside has been out of the question since it got below 40 degrees).

Using my Keurig again, had some tea to stay warm

On another, but somewhat related topic…

Everyone on campus seems to have some form of sickness right now. It is the season for flu and colds, so I have been doing a lot of things to keep myself healthy. Here is my list of ways to stay healthy in winter:

1. Wash Your Hands – everyone always tells me this is the best way to avoid getting sick. I probably actually don’t do this one as often as I should, so I need to work on it.

2. Exercise – This may be my own assumption, but people always say exercise is good for many different reasons.  I am thankful that I have a decent immune system naturally, thanks to my mom, but I also think that by exercising often I keep myself even more immune to sicknesses.

3. Get Plenty of Sleep – I cannot function if I do not get at least 7-8 hours of sleep at night, so this happens year-round for me. Sleep is a priority of mine, no matter how lame my hall mates might think I am!

4. Take Vitamins- I never got into a habit of taking vitamins as a kid and I seemed to be fine, getting sick maybe once a year. I have been taking just regular adult gummy vitamins since starting college. I figure it can’t hurt, and since I have been eating less in the effort of losing weight, this makes sure I still get the essential vitamins and minerals.

I am running out with only one more day’s worth of vitamins. I may just have to steal some from my roommate until I get to the store, since she did the same when she ran out.

5. Eat vegetables – I try to have at least one salad a day of various types of vegetables because they contain so many good nutrients for staying healthy (It also keeps me “regular”, if you know what I mean).

6. Get Vitamin C – I have been hearing this a lot lately from students on campus who feel that soar throat or cough coming on. I eat a lot of fruit at breakfast in the morning including strawberries, cantaloupe, grapes, bananas, as well as apples and oranges as snacks throughout the day, so I don’t worry about my vitamin C intake. I did receive this Emergen-C drink mix free at some event, but I haven’t tried it. I don’t  like anything orange or Vitamin-C flavored, so I doubt I will like this drink. Also, I don’t know if you can see it in the picture, but I laughed out loud looking at the nutrition facts on the back. It says it has 1,667% of your daily value of vitamin C! That doesn’t seem normal.

Eating and Running

This morning for breakfast between classes I had about 1 cup of oatmeal with raisins and brown sugar and coffee. Then for lunch I had a fairly large salad with lots of veggies, beans, and a few mozzarella balls with homemade honey mustard dressing (picture below). I know the dressing is probably very fattening and caloric, but I thought it was okay as long as the rest of the salad was fresh and light.

I had a great day today, getting back midterm grades that I was pleased with and the weather was PERFECT for a run this afternoon. I tried to be artsy taking a lot of pictures with my iphone along the trail around campus, but I am no photographer. I really would like to learn photography and I am thinking of taking a class one semester or just getting one of my friends who know a little to teach me. Here are my attempts:

You have to admit though, the weather was beautiful today!
